Navigating Onsen Etiquette Like a Pro

Onsens have to be one of the most quintessential Japanese experiences - with over 25,000 naturally-occurring mineral hot springs across the country, it’s no wonder that balneotherapy is widely practiced in Japan. The use of bathing as a form of treatment is typically considered “alternative medicine”, but there is no denying the general sense of relaxation it induces. Onsen bathing is also linked to improvement of conditions such as dermatitis - rich in sulphur and magnesium, the water can act as a natural moisturiser. The heat of the baths, typically around 44 degrees Celcius, can reduce inflammation and pain while boosting the immune system.

As with many traditional Japanese experiences, proper etiquette is well established in onsens. While enjoying the beautiful onsen facilities of The Green Leaf Niseko Village and Hilton Niseko Village, the following guidelines can help maintain proper decorum.

Remove your shoes at the entrance
Stepping onto the main floor with your footwear on can be a huge faux pas. Cubicles are provided for this effect.

Nudity is not an option
Both our onsens offer gender specific baths. Baskets and lockers are provided for your personal effects. Once inside the onsen, small hand towels are permitted and can be used for modesty. Please refrain from wearing bathing suits or undergarments.

Wash thoroughly before going in
Water cleanliness being the main goal, be sure to soap up and rinse off properly before entering the baths. Shower stations with shampoo, conditioner and body wash are provided for your convenience in both our onsens. It is customary to place your hand towel on your head while enjoying the baths. With hygiene concerns in mind, if you happen to drop your hand towel in the water, do not wring it out in the onsen.

Maintaining an environment of peace and tranquillity
As the main purpose of these facilities is relaxation, we recommend entering the baths with a minimum of splashing and lowered voices.

Other discouraged behaviours include taking photos, using mobile phones and drinking alcohol within the premises of the onsens.

We look forward to welcoming you to enjoy our beautiful onsen facilities at both The Green Leaf Niseko Village and Hilton Niseko Village for a relaxation experience that is second to none.
